I have a Dell Inspiron 1150 with a Comcast home wireless network. Once I go ouyside my home with the PC I cannot connect to open networks or do work in places like coffee shops. Am I forgetting to set some functions on my PC? Do I need to have additional info from Comcast.

Thanks

the network u want to join should give u the right to do that, and if u have the right, go to (My network places) and then (My local Network ) and change the TCP/IP setting to obtain the IP automatically and then disable and enable the network it ll take about 5 to 10 sec to connect

You cannot just connect to any wi-fi network. The networks at coffee shops like Starbucks are operated by T-Mobile or some other provider. (McDonalds uses wayport) and you have to pay for an account or pay as you go. In order to connect to a secured network you need the network key (also called the wep or wpa key). Do a search for hotspots near you at this web page http://www.wi-fihotspotlist.com/ and check to see who provides the service.

You should be able to sign up with the provider at the location. Many providers will display instructions when browser software opens on a WiFi-enabled computer. If you don't have an account, simply start your computer and make sure your Wi Fi card is plugged on. Then, open a browser.

It should work with open networks. You need to click on the little computer symbol in the task bar and then click on the desired wireless network. It should just connect.
