Assuming there is no physical illness such as a thyroid problem or several other possible medical issues including mental (stress or depression)...
The person gaining weight is consuming more calories than they are burning. But there is a new way to think about this than they taught you in high school health... Many people, in an attempt to lose weight inadvertently slow their metabolisms down with inappropriate dieting. Which is to say that only eating a small amount once or twice a day tells your body to slow down the "burn off" of your food to conserve energy. Basically, your body thinks it is starving so it stops burning and starts storing. So for these people even a piece of toast in the morning and a salad and diet coke at lunch may be too much.
Ironically, if this same person chose to eat 6 small balanced meals a day (protein, lots of veggies, some fruit and a small amount of organic carb, WATER) they would begin to immediately lose weight, as the body no longer has any reason to store food. Light exercises outside your normal routine is good too.
Laziness can of course be a factor.
The biggest lazy thing I see is people asking how they can lose weight and when the answer doesn't appeal to them they say...Oh, I could never find time to eat 6 times a day. Or, I can't drink that much water...I don't have time for a 15min walk. Excuses is where laziness is found

You probably mean in pure body fat right? Well as most people point out, it's through calories, but bear in mind, calories is not a bad thing. In fact the true scientific definition of calories approximates the gram energy needed to increase the temperature of 1 g of water by 1 °C. However, calories s not the only way to gain weight, there is also sugar, which contains a lot of glucose (also found in bread which explains why some diets avoid bread, which isn't unhealthy). Also bad is trans fat and monounsaturated fat which can not be metabolized and store up, leading to obesity. Corn syrup which is similar to sugar as a sweetener is also part of a rise in obesity. Of course, food isn't the only cause, there is also
1. Not being active
2. Having a health problem (like low metabolism)
3. Family History
4. Lack of sleep
among many other variables.

You gain weight when you take in more calories than you burn. How many calories you burn depends on your metabolic rate. That will be higher if you have more lean muscle mass. Many times people who are overweight are not lazy, but haven't consistently built up their lean muscle, and slowly gain weight over time.

Scientifically- humans must gain and lose weight or we wouldn't be here- sounds to me you want overweight? I happen to believe in the genetics code of the body- you will be what your brain and body has to be to survive.
