and possibly less crowded? I am spending one day at Volcano National Park, and one day at the beach. (we're on a cruise, two days on the big island, and i promised hubby one day at the beach on each island). I love to swim so want to make sure I choose the best... Thanks in advance!

IN my opinion, the best swimming beach on thre Big Island is Anaehoomalu Beach.

Pronounced A NA-AY HO O MAH LOO, it is right next to the Royal Waikoloan Hotel. Even during the high surf of winter, unlike many places in Hawaii the beach stays calm because it is protected by a reef, and does not endanger swimmers near the shore.

However, there is a more secluded beach, Kapalaoa, on the south of the bay. Take Waikoloa Beach Drive off from Queen Kaahumanu Highway.

Have fun. Wish I were there.

I'd recommend Mauna Kea Hotel's beach (aka Kauna'oa Beach), which was rated the no.1 beach in America and the no. 5 in the world by the Travel Channel (and no. 1 in America in 1993 by Conde Nast). Crescent-shaped with pure white sands and shimmering aqua waters, the beach is perfect for water activities including swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving, sailing, kayaking, catamaran riding, whale watching and deep-sea fishing. The beach is very well-maintained.

However, it's is so popular that the hotel limits passes to the beach on a first-come, first-serve basis. So go early! The beach is about 31 miles from Kona north on Highway 19 and about 2 miles south of the junction of Highways 19 and 270.
