I really dont think that your friend should hold you resp. That really sounds crappy. Did they know it was leaking? Id say you shouldnt be responsible.........I would just say to your friend that he should have said something....If it seems that it will effect your friendship then maybe offer to pay half. I dont think you should have to pay any, but if your friend is isistant then you need to decide if he truly is a friend you want to have. If you were screwing around and broke it, I might say differently.....but it doesnt sound like you were playing around.....

I feel for you, you are kinda in a bad situation.....Damned if you do and if you dont

If you were driving the tractor because you were told to so, then it's not your responsibility to repair the equipment. I assume that no one said "Drive this tractor to such and such a place, but stop every 2 miles to be certain that it is in perfect condition." If your job did not require you to check for mechanical problems, then it was someone else's responsibility to do so. An employer maintains vehicles, not an employee. As long as you acted in a normal manner, you're off the hook for the cost. And your "friend" sounds like he's trying to get you to pay for his problems.

Go 50/50 on it cause it was their responsibility to tell you if there was anything wrong with it in the beginning, and it's also somewhat your fault to from you driving it AFTER you found out it was leaking hydrolic fuel.

Have to pay? Definitely not. Regardless of whether they knew of the leak, you were a worker and are not responsible for equipment you use in the proper manner.
Save the friendship? I guess this is the sad part where you have to 'value' the relationship.
good luck

Were you responsible for doing maintenance or looking over the tractor? And when you noticed something was wrong, did you stop immediately? I think that if you were not the person responsible for the maintenance and if you stopped driving as soon as possible, and as long as you weren't doing anything with the tractor that you shouldn't have been, that you shouldn't be responsible for the damage.

No, legally you don't have to pay - I guess you need to decide if the friend is worth $250 - a good offer might be to spring for half ($125). btw, what kind of "friend" makes another friend pay for an accident? It's not like you used the bale spears to poke holes in their barn or something.

I don't think you should be responsible. It's not like you did anything to cause it to break. It sounds like it needed to be fixed before you used it. As for what to say or how to maintain the friendship I have no idea. I guess you need to decide if it's really worth having your friend scam you or not.

Your friend should not expect you to pay for equipment that he knew was defective and prone to fail if used. I think you need to re-evaluate the friendship in light of this incident.

well first off if you don't want to ruin the friendship you are going to have to pay if off or work it off.... whether its right or not. I personally don't think you should have to... your friend knew his equipment was old and he should know the condition of it but like I said if you want to save the friendship you are going to have to do something. (and on that note... if you go and pay him back or work it off.... are you going to hold it against him?)

maybe you should ask your friend if you can pay back half because you didnt intentionally ruin the tractor and that you will help fix it.
