Existentialism is a philosophical movement that is generally considered a study that pursues meaning in existence and seeks value for the existing individual. Existentialism, unlike other fields of philosophy, does not treat the individual as a concept, and values individual subjectivity over objectivity. As a result, questions regarding the meaning of life and subjective experience are seen as being of paramount importance, above all other scientific and philosophical pursuits. Existentialism often is associated with anxiety, dread, awareness of death, and freedom. Famous existentialists include Sartre, Nietzsche, Kierkegaard, Camus.

Being an existentialist means you should have a choice of doing what you want and you're responsible for your actions. For example, Aristotle would say that state should define the goodness of people but an existentialist would not adhere to authority and would do what she/he wants being aware of the actions.

For the best defintion of existentialism (or any philosophical idea, term or philosopher themselves) the best place to turn is the Stanford Philosophical Encyclopedia. It has anything you need to know about philosophy in it. I've included the link below. By the way, many will tell you that existentialism is dark, isolationist, and scary, and in a lot of ways it is. But I personally find solace in the fact that ultimately it is the subjectivity of human beings that is most important, and not some theory or mathematical law that dictates the world in which we live. But anyway go read for yourself.

Existentialism is very depressing . It seeks for the importance of the individual and their meaning in life. Read The Stranger by Albert Camus. It may be hard to follow at first but it grows on you.
