The Coriolis effect, which governs the directions in which storm systems rotate, applies only on that sort of huge scale. The direction of swirl in a drain has to do entirely with factors concerning the receptacle, the drain , and the movement of the water. The North/South rule doesn't apply on such small scales as water drains and the growth of curls in hair.

I watched a documentary the other day and they tried it out. They found out that a drain does not go counter-clockwise south of the equator. When a liquid drains, no matter where in the world it's draining, it always goes clockwise.

I crossed the equator years ago on a military troop ship and took note of this very thing-extremely bored. As the ship got closer to the equator the spinning slowed more and more until the water just went straight down as near as I could tell: the ship was rocking pretty badly due to a storm.

That is an old myth. The water runs down the drain either clockwise or counter-clockwise depending on how level the sink or tub is.

Since it is at the equator, it still spins varying with-in 10 degrees north or south. it is not very noticeable, but it does spin.
