i've rec'vd a quote for a new dual pack 'york 4 ton 13 seer unit for $3600. that does not include the price of fixing any leaking they may find in the attic duct work. i'm wondering how much that may cost me. the duct test and permits are all included in the $3600 price. other quotes for the same unit were going to cost about $4900.and they would fix the leaks also in that price. any info is helpful.....

The price variance and quality on duct repairs is amazing. I spent many years in attics, and my work consisted in large part of repairing the sloppy mess left by my alleged competitors.
This is a bad time of year to have the duct work repaired. The a/c biz is red hot, and they will charge a premium for the work while they are busy.

I find that customers tend to be somewhat unrealistic about the value of duct repair. If the leaks are minor, and you could save maybe $5.00 month on utilities, it doesn't make a lot of sense to spend $1000.00 on the repair. However, if a duct is collapsed, or loose, it simply has to be taken care of.

Here is how I would put it to the installation company: "If it can reasonably wait until the winter, and you can give me a nice price break then, I would rather do it that way. However, if there is something that qualifies as an emergency or major repair, I'll take care of that now."

Even then, I would at least get competitive phone quotes once you know the scope of the repairs. There is no wisdom being at anyone's mercy where your hard-earned dollar is concerned.

You most likely have Flex duct, made of plastic and fiberglass, most often the leak at the Fiberboard junctions, get a roll of Silver Tape , not Duct tape, the glue won't last in the heat, get up in the attic and look, Retape the ducts where and if they have came loose- No big deal, do it at night when its cooler.

Sounds like a lot of money to Replace a Compressor unit- it only cost about $750.
