I would chose southern Calif. since it has such a tremendous job market and the wages aren't bad either.

How cheap? like gilroy, modesto, or stockton... well, I would go to stockton first if you can't get into San Jose. All are not too far from the bay area. To me the Bay is the best area because the weather is great and you can find everything. So cal is ok, but expensive and the first thing people picture when you think cali. The bay area (I'm from San Jose) is in the middle of everything. You can find expensive and ritzy areas (for shopping and what not), art and culture in San Francisco, Castro, farms and vineyards are not far (napa valley is close), Santa Cruz beach is beautiful. I could go on, but it all depends on what you are interested in...

Bakersfield,it is a great for people that are not rich.still have family there.
