You should be getting upwards of 28 to 30 mpg with the 2005 Taurus. If you are not getting that much on the highway, and you notice a surge when driving, take it into your local dealer and tell them you are getting poor fuel mileage. There has been a powertrain control module update from Ford. If you have it reprogrammed at the dealer, you should see higher fuel mileage numbers.

Getting better gas mileage is tricky on your part. Here are some ways that you can save a LOT of gas mileage by doing the following:

(1) Avoid sudden stops and acceleration
(2) Avoid passing slower cars
(3) Avoid depressing the gas peddle to the floor
(4) Avoid accelerating up-hill -- try to keep your momentum at a certain speed.
(5) Avoid filling your gas tank up to the "neck" -- You wont use that gas and most of the time it will just evaporate.

Keep within 10% of the speed limit and your mileage will be very good. Also, keeping the tire pressure at the recommended level will improve it as well. Measure tire pressure when the tires have been sitting and not right after driving- the heat will give a false reading above what the true pressure is. If you want to inflate the tires with a gas that will not respond to temperature change, the only one that is that way is Nitrogen.

I have a five speed stick ford truck that I got 19.5 mph so I decided to see if I could get better mileage. I started to not go over 2.5 K rpm between gears (that was tough to do, keeping my foot out of it) and now I get 22.5 mpg. I was amazed. Also be sure you tires have the correct pressure which makes quite a difference and a clean air filter. Basically keep your foot out of it for a tank of gas just for an experiment and see the difference.

Better gas mileage from a ford is to make sure you check tires to make sure they have the right amount of air pressure in them. Lube and oil your car at 3000 - 4000 miles. Make sure you check wires and spark plugs are on properly. Get the right gas. Make sure you dont always get cheap gas.

I noticed a huge improvment when I switched to platinum plugs AND a K&N air filter. I think the K&N made the most improvment. I now use both items in all of my vehicles, Im sold.

I tried the tornado (after market upgrade) and noticed hardly any change at all. Certainly not enough to justify the $70 price tag.
Good luck

Well have you done the simple things? Air in the tires, platinum spark plugs, keep the gas tank at least half way full at all times, tune up, proper alighnment, etc? Every little thing makes a difference!

take it to your local dyno shop, have it tuned with a wideband 02 sensor. (wide open + part throttle), keep the plugs, injectors, airfilter etc. clean. stay away from snake oil BS like the 'tornado' and Z-max! these are a fools paradise.
