if it's smaller than a honey bee, it's prob a yellow jacket...nasty little things, very aggressively guard the nest, but not likely to attack you away from it...there are other harmless ground bees that nest in small groups or alone

To wipe out yellow jackets, go to the UN and get help. mass a large army next to the border and wage an air campaign for several weeks before you invade...expect moderate casualties.

The yellow jacket is the culprit. The sting is very painful and the venom is strong. To get rid of them: When the air temp. is cool, pour kerosene on the ground all over their nesting area. Wait about 30 seconds, and ignite the kerosene. Between the fumes and the heat, the nest should be extinguished.

Most likely they are Yellow Jackets not Bees and they can sting you badly. Buy a Hornet/Wasp/Yellow Jacket bomb at your hardware store and wait until dark Then spray the ground nests with the bomb and that will do the trick in one shot because if you wait until after dark all of them are back home in the nest and you will get them all.

It is called a Cicada Killer Wasp. It digs holes in the ground leaving dirt mounds next to its holes. For more information see below.
