To each its own. No matter what reason you are doing it for, you must carefully weigh your options for you and your family. However, the problem with cremation, today, is will one get actually cremated. There have been many cases where funeral homes have not cremated the bodies and simply given ash to families, which were not really ash from the deceased or any deceased for that matter. One big recent case caught national news in Georgia. So, after reviewing your options, the decision is ultimately up to you.

I think it depends on 2 things:
1) Some religions claim that in order to rise up to heaven when Gabriel blows his horn, your body must be intact and interred (in a grave, a mausoleum, whatever). Honest -- I didn't make that up. Also, the body can't have any tattoos on it. I'm not certain what is supposed to happen to people who have lost a limb or something, but I guess they're just out of luck.
2) How you think people will react to your death. When I was growing up, every Memorial Day, we went to visit the graves of grandparents, aunts, uncles, everyone anybody ever knew who was then dead. We'd pack a picnic lunch and cruise the graveyards -- I'm not kidding. We'd say prayers over the graves and contemplate the people's lives. Mind you, I was just a kid and had never known any of those people when they were alive, but it was a tradition that a lot of people adhered to.
When my mother died, she had her funeral all planned and paid for because she wanted it done "right." She wanted to be buried near the family so we could go visit her grave. I went to the funeral, but only my older sister has ever visited the grave. I'd rather remember her alive than buried.
I've already given instructions to be cremated and my ashes scattered over the Pacific Ocean. I don't need a headstone telling everyone when I lived and died.

I say yes, we spend too much money on modern funerals and cemeteries are a waste of space.
