I really don't think that one has anything to do with the other. There are 3 feet in a yard. Some people can play piano by ear. Those people have perfect pitch which lets them recognize the notes they are hearing and then they play them.

Some people train their ears to decipher musical notes. I can usually find the key of D pretty easy but it has taken lots of practice both with singing and playing musical instruments including the guitar and piano. Eventually you can play a tune by just working with the key board for a little while like I can. I used to use sheet music, but usually don't need it any more.
It's called a trained ear and is acquired by some people easier than others.
Some people only acquire a tin ear. That is one that cannot decipher tones and they are the RAP singers.
