How much is it appropriate to tip at a buffett resturant? I know that most wait-staff depends on tips to make a living, but if I'm not getting the same kind of service as I get at a full service restruant, then why should I tip on the same scale?

My husband and I always tip based on service the same way you would at a full service resturant. I know most of the buffet resturants around us employees the servers the same as full service, ie low hourly wages depending on tips.

Generally I do not tip more than 10% at a buffet. Sometimes though I do not tip at all. Especially if I do not see anyone cleaning up to help keep tables cleared for incoming customers.
The tipping though should be on the cost before tax added in.
God Bless.

Generally speaking it is a scale between 10-15%. The higher end is for those servers who are very good. For those people who say they do nothing I would like to ask them how easy they think it is to clean up after forty to fifty people who average three to four courses and two or three drinks each. Not to mention picking up the mess left by small children. They dont do "nothing" for you. they remove dirty plates, serve your beverages, get you clean silverware, and if you have any questions about the food they will help you. buffets are relatively inexpensive and 10% is only a couple dollars.

I manage a buffet and I tell my servers that they have to work that much harder to provide a level of service that most guests wouldn't expect from a buffet. As always you should tip based on the level of service you recieve.

Just tip the same amount that you would at a full service restaurant. It's probably a difference of a dollar or two.

I never tip at buffets. I figure why should I pay a server when they make me do all the work? servers at buffets should be given a living wage cause nobody bothers to tip.

when i'm by myself i'm usually tip about $2 or $3 and when i'm with someone i usually tip $5, even though it's buffet just remember because it's buffet there's tons of people, so you can't really blame them.

just remember tips is part of their wage,

i remember when i used to deliver foods for this restaurant omg some people are just awful tipper i mean like god damn it's freakin snowing and $hit plus gas is not 1.50/gallon anymore, and i'm getting paid 5bucks per hour which is inferior consider that min wage in CT is 7.25.

we don't have much buffets in CT, and i like them don't want to run outta business so i go to business very often.

sum it up tips is about 50-75% of their wage so i tried to tip more as always.

Good question... I usually leave a couple bucks... most people seem to leave nothing. Like you said, it's not a full-service restaurant and so it's a tough decision... afterall, you're doing most of the work... you're standing in line to pay, you're getting you're own foods, you're even sometimes refilling your own drinks. If all they're doing is cleaning up after you, I probably wouldn't leave anything... no service, no tip.

I usually tip 10% at buffets because the waitstaff is so underpaid.
