The tritone is an augmented 4th or a diminished 5th. A tritone is an interval of 6 half steps or 3 whole steps. some examples of tritones are E and Bb, F and B, A and Eb, C and F#. It is not the most harmonically dissonant interval (that would probably be the minor 2nd) but it can be quite jarring when used as a melodic interval. Harmonicly it creates tension such as between the 3 and b7 of a dominant chord.
