The fleas I know say that it may not be fatal unless they are physically coated (I think they must have it cover their thorax from which they derive their air supply).

If you have fleas in your carpets, one of the best remedies that is non toxic to your pets can be regular table salt, it causes great irritation of the fleas, and dehydrates them so they cannot live. Sometimes if you live near the ocean maybe salt water would help temporarily for fleas on a dog or cat?

Now IF the animal can be kept out of the area, I can recommend a formula of RAID that specifies that it also kills the eggs of the fleas, the last time I bought any of it, it was in a dark purple can and had all kinds of warnings on it! IT SAYS ON THE CAN THAT IT WILL KILL THE EGGS IF YOU TREAT YOUR CARPETS WITH IT. BUT...if it leaves behind enough poison to kill flea eggs then it may also leave down enough poisons to be absorbed through your skin or your animals' feet. Perhaps you could find an organic material that will help kill the fleas off (if they ever become a problem)...I do know that they do not like table salt because it causes them to dry out and die! Fleas like most critters cannot live without moisture!

Good luck with your kitty, teach it to love rats while it is young, we are taking over the world, and I want to improve Cat/Rat relations in this country and Internationally.
Respectfully:
The Rattykins

Does Flea Powder Work

It doesn't really work...I think that fleas have become immune to the stuff you buy at places like wal-mart. At best, the flea powder might work for a couple of days, but wont kill all the eggs, and the fleas will be back. The only thing I've found to work is stuff from the vet--usually Frontline. It's more pricey, but you only use a little bit and within 24 hours the fleas are gone for good. I used it on all my animals in May only ONE TIME, and havent seen one flea since. There's also Advantix, but I use frontline because I have cats as well as dogs, and Frontline is the only kind that you can use the dog kind on cats, too.

Over the counter flea stuff (like Hartz) is usually not very reliable. Get frontline or something similar from your vet.
However you shouldn't use any chemicals on young kittens. Check with your vet on what the appropriate age would be for your kitten to start on flea control. You can ask while you are there getting her shots and setting an appointment to spay her...:-)

I am sorry for your loss but I am afraid the answer is almost assuredly, yes. There have been countless posts on this site about people's cats and dogs becoming extremely ill or dieing as a result of using Hartz and other otc flea products. Sadly too, the company will probably accept no responsibility. They certainly have not to date and go on producing and selling their deadly products to unsuspecting pet owners. Please do get your other cat to the vet right away. Consider it an emergency. Go to a 24 hour clinic if you can't get a rush appointment with your regular vet.

I was horrified to hear about what had happened your cats. I have never heard of Hartz, but I have been avoiding all chemical products since I discovered that I am allergic to artificial chemicals and additives. When my new cat started to get fleas a few weeks ago, I asked a friend of mine for her advice as she is really into herbal and natural remedies. I was amazed to hear that her cats, dogs, goats etc. never get fleas, ticks and worms. She said that she gives her pets Brewers yeast every week in their food. I have started trying it now and my cat is already starting to do well on it. She also feeds her cats and dogs raw food so as to avoid all the artificial stuff that producers put in. Hope this helps to keep your remaining cat and any future friends in good health. Almost forgot to mention that I have seen her cats, and that they are very healthy looking with fantastic coats.

Don't use Hartz flea products!!! I used it on my cats and the toxins in it almost killed them. Especially since it's a kitten and they are most vulnerable to flea medicines- take her to the vet! The vet can tell you if they are flea eggs and what product is safe to use.

Don't take chances with your pet, this is something that could be dangerous or even fatal. Worry more about that than whether or not it will work.

the best & safest stuff is from your vet. also make sure to NEVER USE DOG FLEA PRODUCTS on a CAT. they will DIE.

bathe her with a mild detergent once a week to remove adult fleas, larvae, and eggs. Groom her with a flea comb between baths. Dip the comb in water after every stroke to drown any fleas you comb out.

A home remedy to keep fleas off of your cat is this simple solution: Slice a whole lemon very thin (peel 'n all) and add to a pint of water. Heat this mixture right until the boiling point. Let sit overnight. In the morning gently rub the mixture into your cats fur and skin. Just dampen the fur don't drench it!

avoid flea powders containing pyrethrins. Although considered safe, the cats will lick it off when grooming and will be ingested.

You can't use Advantix on cats, it will kill them! Hartz is not a good product. If you didn't use any of it take it back and get the money back and return it to your boss. Tell the boss thank you for the help, but I found out is wasn't fleas. I use Revolution on my cats so they won't have fleas.
