Psychology as a formal disipline usually isn't thought to have come together until about the 19th century, though who ever set it up probably did have some knowledge of maniplulation and persuasion, or maybe they just came across some true belivers.
Chances are a lot of people influenced by a lot of factors went into it, and one guy isn't likely to have set it up. In fact the children themselves may have willing when in order to be like daddy.

the childrens crusade was primarily motivated by a young french peasant's vision that the march of pure chrisitian children to the gates of jerusalem would cause the gates to be opened and the city to be returned to the hands of christians. he sang about his vision and allegldy played a pipe while doing so. this is one origin of the pied piper legend
