I am 13 and I want to get a debit card. I don't know what I need to do to get one, so I need some help. I have a savings account at Chemical Bank. Can you get one with a savings account? My dad brought up the subject of getting one and said I should be able to, but I don't know. Can anyone help me?

I need one because I have had cash stolen before and I've heard that Debit is better that cash. If I have to have a parent apply with me can I get my own account or will it be with theirs, because they wouldn't let me have access to their money. NO WAY!! lol but I am just really confused and I need some help. Thanks!!

No you can't, you have to be 18 to have a checking account or a debit card. Some credit card companies allow some kind of "prepaid" credit card, or a low credit limit card, but if you're 13 you don't need anything like a debit card, cash should be fine for you I don't think you'll be buying things where you need a card.

No. You are too young and if there was a problem they could not legally collect the debt from you.
You might be able to have your dad help you get a prepaid VISA card using your bank account money. Those cards have a dollar value that you can spend down just like a credit card. When it is empty you need to refill it to be able to spend again. That keeps you from crazy spending sprees. Since it spends just like cash (store gets paid right away) they don't worry about your sticking them for invalid purchases. You still need to keep in mind that when you buy things with these cards your money is still going away - so you still need to stop and think before you spend with them.

You have to have a checking account. Usually it has to have a parents name on it too, and you can't make withdraw;s without their approval. So I am guessing no to the debit, because it works like a credit card. Maybe there is something tho that has some kind of limit as to what you can take out. You will have to ask your bank :)

Yes, if you have money in the bank already, you should be able to get a savings account. You will need to go to the bank and transfer some of your money into a checking account. Because you are a minor, you will need to take your parent with you to sign all the proper paperwork.

Check with your bank to see if you can get one. You usually can get a ATM card with a savings account, but you need a checking account for a debit card.
Hope this helps!

No. you cannot get a debit card without a checking account and you must be 18 to have a checking account. Why on earth do you need a debit card?

Hi! I'm also 13, and I doubt there would be any problem with you getting a debit card. I'm saying this because my friend has one, but it may be a little different with you because your bank may have different policies, I'm not sure. I don't see why not though!

When I was 13, I got one, but it was linked to a checking account. I don't know of any linked to a savings, but that doesn't make me right. My mom had to sign off on the card, but that was all.

No, you can't get one, you are too young. Your parents can get you a credit card and then put money on it for you or something like that, but your parents will have to be the ones to do it.
