My all-time favorite book is Silmarillion by Tolkien. If you're into adventure/mythical kind of books, I stronlgy suggest you read it. It is 100% better than Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Contemporary or Classics?

Contemporary -- I would have to go with anything by Paulo Coelho, he is intoxicatingly wonderful!

Classic -- There are so many! Anything by Toni Morrison (she id one of the greatest African American authors) and Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston is another great novel.
