I'm afraid that we are becoming divided -- everyone seems to have very strong views on these illegals -- some for and some against -- and with everything else going on in the world right now is not the time to start a civil war -- we need to stay united -- I pray that we do-

The states of our country may be physically united, but the same does not necessarily apply to the people within them. We do things regularly to help bring union and peace among us, and yet they always seem to generate segregation and ways to categorize and classify. Yet, when those tests come when we must see if we will stand united or fall divided such as with the 9/11 attacks, we always prevail. We manage to rise above the adversities which we are faced and join together, not disregarding our differences, but using them to our advantage. So, to answer the question, I must say both. The individual American is divided within them self by finding common things with others, while the entire country of America is united by the differences we find within the country.

Divided. The world is slowly depleting and we don't even see it. Are president is a moron who feels that we should enter wars that we cant not fight. Bush is doing nothing to help unite America. He is politically incorrect all the time. He did do the correct thing by entering the war but he is in the wrong area and took no action to support his defensive maneuver I feel that we have never been fully united.

divided by little things but UNITED in the true important stuff! You don't see states trying to leave the union like in the civil war...and back with the original 13 colonies there was almost open warfare. When you have a country based on ideals , like the USA, you will always have different opinions on things-but thats the greatest asset we have--the ability to speak our minds --no matter how mind-less sometimes!

Both! And that's a perfect example of the quality of governmental system set up by our ForeFathers, that we can agree to disagree, and unite against intruders as the situation calls for it. Of course, that form of government is an ideal that will not work unless the citizenry act in such a manner as to make it happen, so, the realization that my rights end where your rights begin is a primary awareness that all responsible citizens should have. I do worry about the "responsibility" or maturity of great portions of our citizenry, and even my own maturity and civility at times, but I do know where the path to success lay, and I'm trying to do my part to keep the path to that ideal of government that our ForeFathers had, alive. God Bless you and thanks for a very responsible and mature question.

America is one great big basket case and I love her dearly for that.
Think about what kind of country we would be living in if we weren't allowed to be divided?
Russia during the 40s and 50s? Spain under Franco? No thank you. I'll take my wacky, neurotic country any day.

divided it's always divided in war time. It's got to do with who can play the blame game better. Take a look at the Vietnam war.

We are more divided today than any time throughout USA history. Even when you count the civil rights movements and John Brown era of anti-abolitionists.
