Cop shows are entirely unrealistic and are just the same morality tale over and over. They have entirely too much popularity.

Because there were one or two in the beginning that were good and got popular and all the copycats had to come out of the woodwork and flood tv with them... Now everyone is gettign sick of them, so we're looking at the next show to copy (Superhero shows maybe)

I completely agree with you, I mean CSI has 3 shows. All it basically is are they are in different cities. the only "cop" show that i watch is law and order SVU. But since CSI is the #1 rated show on television every network wants to have the #1 show. Until CSI has a ratings downfall, there are going to be more cop shows.

War movies. CIA/FBI shows. Yes, it's nauseating. In 80s movies I take a drink whenever I see a Russian in the dark, smoking and whispering whilst hatching plans against the Americans.
But yeah, I still watch them and love it. But heck, I also watch public access and PBS (whose mystery shows are entirely different).
P.S. Do the Miami CSI people really drive around in Hummers?

It's not just cops. You've got hospitals and courtrooms / law firms. If your show doesn't fit into any of these categories (on the Big 4), it's not gonna get too far.

This question piqued my interest when I heard a cop show celebrating "civil forfeiture" laws tonight. (Google that + "John Oliver").
I'm afraid much of what you see on TV is propaganda designed to keep you feeling OK about the status quo as your freedoms keep receding.

People like to watch people get arrested, especially at Mardi Gras festivals. I think they have a Mardi Gras special every year.
