There used to be a saying regarding placement of an earring on a man that went: "Left is right and right is wrong". This ment that is a man wore a stud or ring in left ear, he was OK, even cool. But if he wore a ring or stud in his right ear, he was gay.
Today I do not think there is any kind of 'standard', it is all a matter of personal preference. I wear a hoop and stud in my left ear, and a single hoop in my right... just to cover all the bases (JK - I am gay, but my earrings had nothing to do with that LOL)

maybe 20 or 25 years ago if on the right. But nobody pays attention to that anymore. Usually most guys who have ear rings have it on both

I don't think it means anything other than that he's got an earring anymore. But actually the old rhyme went:
Left is right and right is wrong. And in the context it was said (hurtful to me and others) was that a gay person wore one in his right ear, and that was "wrong".
But today's fashion statements don't often make any statement at all.

wearing an earring, no matter what ear, doesn't "mean" anything...except that whoever is wearing it likes earrings. lots of guys, gay and straight, wear earrings in 1 or both ears. doesn't signify anything

i have both ears peirced but i don't think that me having them peirced is the reason i'm gay i think it's the fact that I like men lol
