Is it illegal to paint your cars plates a diffrent color? I wanted to paint mine black and chrome out the letters and numbers. Any help would be appreciated guys.

Go ahead. Yeah, it's illegal, but when they throw you in prison, maybe you can talk them into a new design when you are making them!

Yes it is illegal by the state preference. One of the big things cops decipher plates by is there distinct look and design. If one can not get all the letters on the plate one can say yeah the plate was yellow or blue or something like that and the car can at least be identified to a state and then something might come up in the database of vehicles. If you want to know what is legal and what is not, just go and walk into your local police station and ask a cop. They will more then likely just tell you. I did that when I wanted to know what tint was allowed and ground effects lights and all that. But hey live life on the edge and try it. But I know for a fact it is illegal to paint your plate.

Yes, it's illegal. The colors of the plate identifies the state it's from.

Yes it is illegal to modify your license plates... you can get around this by making your own plates... of course... if you do that.. then you cannot drive it on public roadways.
