People like rap for the same reasons people like rock, jazz, country, etc. Either A) they can relate to it, B) it makes them feel good, C) they can dance to it, or D) all of the above.

I do understand why people such a negative perception about hip hop music; all you see on TV and hear on the radio is negativity. But most people's opinions are based on only one dimension of the genre (the mostly negative and stereotypical mainstream rap that's force fed to us on a daily basis) instead of the genre as a whole. Not all rap is like what you see on TV or hear on mainstream radio stations. If you're willing to dig a little deeper into the genre, you'll discover that not all rap emphasizes materialism, misogyny or is filled with profanity. As a matter of fact, there are a lot of hip hop artists out there who don't fit the "cookie cutter rapper" mold and talk about subjects other than sex, drugs, money and murder. For example:

- A Tribe Called Quest
- Little Brother
- Mos Def
- Talib Kweli
- Common
- De La Soul
- Dead Prez
- The Roots
- Madlib (and his alter-ego, Quasimoto)
- Five Deez
- Ugly Duckling
- Slum Village...(and plenty more)

Unfortunately, we rarely (if ever) see artists like them in the mainstream media. A lot of the real emcees have been put on the backburner or are stuck in the underground circuit because for the most part, good ol' Corporate America has flooded the market with greedy rappers with a gangsta/baller fantasy because that's what's "hot" right now. Nowadays, it's all about whatever makes them the most money as opposed to actual talent, variety and substance.

Many people say they dont like it, but in actually, they dont really know it. My favorite type of music is not rap, trust me, I'm a big rocker. But I have explored the genre of rap and have found ALOT of songs and artists you can actually appreciate and respect. Nas is amazing, Lupe Fiasco, Pharrel, AZ. Alot of older rap is very good. Many people dont like it because of the image it has, but all those rappers you see on MTV and BET are (to me) not real rappers. They are pop artists and ..well, sell outs. I think there is a certain elements of realness and rawness that many other genres of music dont have and maybe for some people.. they cant handle that or dont want to face it.

I am not a big fan of rap, but it is just like country music. It tells a story--just from a different prospective. And everyone has a story to tell.

Personally, I don't like it but to each his (or her) own. I just wish that people wouldn't blast it when they're in public places. It's really hard trying to explain to an 8 year old or a 5 year old what some of those words they're "singing" are.

I notice, when people grow up and get a job, they tend to like rap a lot less. Just my experience. I don't know why people like it... I think most young teenagers like it and then they mature and don't like it anymore.

I think like all music, it is what your interested in, or comfortable listening to. I like rap and rock because i like the sounds and beats. I don't like country because it seems slow and boring to me. I don't like punk or punk rock because its annoying to me... I don't like 'hard metal' tho i do like some, because it's loud/highpitch and i can't understand it... it's all based on a one person...me personally tho, i just listen to the sound i don't really pay attention to the words or meanings...
I don't know tho that's just my opinion..

Neither do I, but it's all about opinion I guess. Some like to listen to talking/swearing to music, some don't.
