I totally agree with superrelax! Hip hop is not dead - it's alive and well. You're just looking in all the wrong places. Most people don't have a clue what they're missing, simply because they refuse to put forth the effort to look below the surface (read: the mainstream).

Interestingly enough, I find that most people who say they don't like rap/hip hop and complain about rap's many vices don't realize that they're only seeing one dimension of hip hop. In other words, a lot of people don't know as much about the genre as they think they do (i.e. - the difference between an MC and a rapper...and yes, there is a difference). Most of them base their opinions on the kind of rap that the mainstream media force feeds us day in and day out. I'm here to tell you that not all rap emphasizes materialism, misogyny or is filled with profanity (i.e. - conscious rap, Christian rap, etc.). There's still some good, quality hip hop out there for those that bother to look for it, but you definitely won't find it in the mainstream.

Hell no I think it's the opposite.. Do you live in a small town?
Rock has always been around and always will be. It's definately the most popular among white people.

Rap is number one with blacks, and reggaeton is now number one with Latinos.. with rap second and probably spanish rock third.

I don't think rap and hiphop will ever be dead actually. As long as there are urban gangsters there will be rap. As long as there are ghettos there will be rap.. I think that perhaps it's losing popularity with whites but I haven't really seen that yet where I live. All the top40 stations are at least half rap - but the thing is that rap is influencing what used to be pop. Like Gwen Stefani and the Pussycat Dolls or whatever. They now use hiphop beats and have rap stars guest on their tracks.

Come on even Linkin park hooked up with rap

We can only hope so.

I notice a few more rock songs on the radio, but still, there are far more rap and hip-hop "songs" that are heard. I do think that rap is "crap", in that a lot of hip-hop uses samples from rock songs in stealing the work of others. I heard a rap song yesterday that sample's Ozzy's "Crazy Train" and uses the track all through the song. It would be nice of rap and hip-hop were dead, but to me, it continues to be rammed down our throat by corporate playlists.

I love rap and hip hop. It is no where near dead, every week there is a new song out. Some rock i like but it is too much screaming and noise in it. I like rap because it has a hype bet and you can dance to it. With rock you just jump around. Rap is what it is and rock is what it is. Different people like different music i have nothing' against people who like rock, it's just not my type of music. If you listen to 105.1 or hot 97 (97.1)FM you will see that it is great.

It's not dead. It's the most popular form of music right now. Most pop songs are hip-hop based. Alot of rock songs/bands have hip-hop influence. I also don't know what radio station you're listening to, but the ones I listen have way more hip-hop than any other genre.

No. But most rappers aren't as good as they used to be. And all of the rock songs suck. I admit it I used to listen to rock when it first came out becuase it actually had a meaning. But now I can't even hear the rock bands with out using ear plugs. In other words the radio you are listening to is either a rock station or you don't listen to it all the time.

i think it's loosing steam since eminem and other big names are fading from the spotlight. At the same time rock bands have their stars. I don't think hip hop or rap is gone but i think they need a star to pull them out of the rut they seem to be in. I mean if they don't it's okay by me- i'm a rock fan. Have a good one!

..I don't think it was ever alive. It was/is a fad but it was never really considered a form of music. It was mainly taking old songs, playing the music in the background and then making up rhymes to say on top. I will give it to some of the artists...they are talented poets/writers..but never musicians. In the beginning with RUN DMC there was some ok stuff...it was new and different....but now it all sounds the same....nothing interesting...
