Too much light makes algae grow. You either have too strong a bulb or are leaving it on too long.

it is normal ..the humidity from the water allows it to grow...that means that you have a good light sorce ...if plant life can grow...it is simulating nature more closely...so that is a good thing...i just wipe mine down when i think about it it usually comes off easily with a wet paper towel...the closer to nature will make your fish look their best and live longer get sick less ect. oohh i feed a little of the alge to my fish too..they love it

It might be that you're apparently using an incandescent bulb.
Think about switching to a fluorescent fixture instead. They run cooler, better lighting but not prone to creating algae.
If your tank is receiving sunlight during the day you might also want to relocate is elsewhere.

Clean it off once a week. That really is the best way, unless you want to get algae killer from a petstore. That will also kill any plants you have growing in the tank.

Change the bulb. As they age, they produce more lower spectrum light which encourages algea growth.

The algae is forming because the light is getting wet, maybe your fish or filter is splashing it?
