This is not my work. I read this yesterday and was impressed with the authors views. I have been in 43 different countries and have yet to find one that I am as impressed with as I am the USA. The United States , even as imperfect as we are, is still the envy of the world. The very proof of this is the many loud voices that scream we are not.
If we were not the very axis around which the world cultures revolve, no one would bother mentioning the fact that they think we are not.
That said, we as a Nation and a people should practice the motto of our late president Teddy Roosevelt and "Walk softly, and Carry a big stick." We have the Big stick, however, from others point of view we do not "Walk Softly".

This is a excerpt from Dine sh D'Souza's book, perhaps you can use part of it.

The positive side-patriotism unites people.

The negative side-patriotism feeds fuel to the fire of the politicians and war mongers of the world.

You can love your country and dislike those who run it. Unfortunately the post 9/11 world has made all of us "all or none" people.

Like all things, patriotism needs to be quelled a bit in order to be effective. Since 9/11, "patriotism" has taken on a new meaning and it causes fear.

Our world is a mess. Our nation is a mess. Nothing is as it should be and patriotism has done the opposite of what it should have done. We are at war over oil and religion. Personally, I take no pride in that. Yet, I do love my country. It's all I know.

patriotism is standing up for what is right.not going along with the popular philosophy of the day.the ruling class always beats the drum of patriotism and nationalism to curtail our civil rights and send the poorer classes to fight their wars to protect or expand their capital/wealth.look up some writings by Howard Zinn - they have been an invaluable tool to help tell the real stories of american history/patriotism etc. - good luck
