I can't find any knitting classes in the area, but I also don't want to spend money on supplies and a how-to book if it is hard to teach myself.
I have nooooo knitting experience.

Neither did I! I bought the book Stitch 'N *****, which has a great tutorial. Casting on and knitting are easy to learn from a book. Purling, however, is difficult (and knitting and purling are technically the only 2 stitches). I kept messing that up, so I went to a local yarn shop and asked another customer who kindly helped me. If you aren't too shy, you can ask one of the customers browsing through yarn at Wal-Mart. Also, see if your town has a local Stitch 'N *****. The people in those groups welcome newbies and help out a lot.

Supplies for knitting are cheap. All you really need to start out are needles (sizes 6 and 8, maybe) and yarn. Your first projects will be scarves, since those are easy. Have just a little patience, and before you know it, you'll be making great gifts for friends.

Good luck!

It took me quite awhile to get the hang of knitting, but I'm completely self taught, so it can certainly be done! I suggest checking out the following:

You can actually see how to make the stitches, plus much more.

It really depends on whether you are able to learn easily from books and illustrations. Some people can, some can't. I taught myself how to crochet from a book, yet I have never been able to learn to tat from a book. The public library usually has a load of knitting and crochet books that show how to learn the craft, and they can range from very beginner to advanced. Good luck!

Check at your local library if they have a crafts section. They might have books on knitting. You could learn from them. It is not difficult. I taught myself to knit from the books and also from tv programs. There is one called Knitty Gritty.
