Because of the alliteration - Wonder Woman. Also, 'Super Woman' would have sounded too much like a Superman derivative, which didn't catch on until the 70's. It also gave them an excuse to make that WW pattern in her costume that really accentuated her bosom.

Trivia: Super Woman appeared much later in the Legion of Super Villains of Earth-3. She had powers like Superman but was evil.

Well, when Wonder Woman was created in the 40's, they didn't want any confusion with superman. But, in the 60's they created supergirl, who was Superman's cousin. I still think Superman and Wonder Woman should have gotten married. He should have dumped Lois Lane.

Its because they wanted Super Girl. So that name was already taken.
And they liked the W W ryme S W Just is not the same
