The brain realizes that the stomach is full as soon as it is. When you eat more than the stomach's capacity, it stretches, causing pain.
It takes about 15-20 minutes for the brain to realize that sufficient food has been ingested to raise the blood sugar level, ending hunger. This is why some dieticians suggest eating fruit before a meal. Fruit is high in a sugar called fructose, which enters the blood and helps to cue you in that you are no longer hungry. Unlike sucrose, fructose does not spike and drop blood sugar, which leaves you hungrier.
You are more like to eat until your stomach is over-full if you eat a meal that is higher in fats and protein. Your body CAN convert this to sugar, but it's a slower process, so you are more likely to overeat than if there is something with simple sugars at the start of the meal.

It takes 20 minutes after you start to eat. When I was on a mission to loose weight, I would eat 1/3 of my meal, set a timer and wait to proceed. It worked and I lost better than ever just practicing that self control.

20 minutes, so eat slow.. and the more you chew, the less time it takes to digest and the less time it takes to digest, the less time its spent in your body turning into fat
