I would make a giant maze out of arborvitae hedging like in the movie "The Shining"). And within the maze would be secret gardens with different kinds of plants srubs and flowers. I would plant some honey locust trees here and there for light shade. And incorporate many water features. Dont forget hardscaping like stone paths, walls and decorative boulders. Have fun!

above all dont pave the paths - use just big stepping stones surrounded with lawn. instead of grass lawn you can go for low or creeping plants that dont require mowing and are more beautiful than just grass. yes, a maze is great idea, but you can do nearly the same with just lines of bushes that will make hidden places in your garden - not necessarily geometrically trimmed maze. you may plant some trees but you will use more bushes - they will do the actual landscaping work as they grow fast and change the appearance of the garden.

so i would start with
1. designing and building solid features like walls (dry walls) paths (only stepping stones), a pond, compost bins, rock garden.

2 planting bushes to shape the garden and trees (to give you fruit and shade later) dont froget bushes with fruit - not in dull patches but nicely scattered and mixed in

3. to sow some rich meadow mixture as a lawn.

4. sit back, absorb the colors of the garden round the year, and think where you want some flowerbeds, some crops, and what, also how you can get the crops to become part of the beauty of the garden. like i have wild strawberries growing, eh, wild, everywhere. so whoever pays a visit to me in their season just pops his eyes out when he sees that what looked as an ordinary lawn to him is in fact packed with yummy fruit.

Ever heard of Vita Sackville-West? She had amazing gardens in England in the early 1900s(1892-1962). Like her I would have a white garden, an orange/red garden, roses in the perennial borders, many fruit trees. And I've always wanted to have trees that flower in succession. That would be something blooming almost all the time. You know, like Chinese Magnolias first, then Flowering Pears, then the fruit trees, then the Grevilleas, the Jacarandas, etc...

What a great idea!! I would incorporate a large herbal knot garden, with Japanese accents. I also would include an appilier, and several species fruit trees.
