You can make a huge difference. War is not a "natural" event--it is created by humans. Although the causes of war are complex, often the underlying issues boil down to lack of opportunity, disease, poverty and despair. Before you dismiss the possiblities like so many of the respondents to your question, take a look at what OTHERS are doing to make a difference.
Global activism --- Worldview, a program from Chicago Public Radio, has a series discussing the exceptional contributions people are making to education and opportunity around the world:

Hunger --- Bread for the World is an organization that is concerned with what the US Government is doing around the world to eliminate hunger, poverty, and AIDS:

As others have said, be sure you are registered to vote. I believe you'll find global activism a good stepping stone to the "prevent war" level. Best of luck to you on your journey!

As an individual it is not possible, but its a start, and the more individuals against war get together, maybe we can do something. The problem is we need to remove the world of greed and religion. Money and religion is the root of all wars. We cannot as people handle either.

Since a war involves so many people, it's probably unlikely that you could get all of them to listen to you and even if you could, how would you ever get them to stop fighting.
On the other hand, you can strive to be a peace maker among people such as in your family or among your friends or even in your neighborhood. It would surely be a noble endeavor to learn ways to plant the desire for peace in people's hearts. If you are trying to understand all sides to critical questions and you genuinely care for the people on all sides, you are well on your way to being a peace maker and perhaps maybe someday a shining example like Mahatma Gandhi. Theoretically, if enough people involved in a war held you in high enough esteem as a peace maker, you might actually be able to stop a war.

Only the war within you. You are obviously torn and sensitive....an old soul, I sense. This is to be commended....a very rare trait. However, realize that there is little you can do on your own. It is not the number of breathes you take, but what is happening when you take them. Go forth and enjoy life. In 100 years, what happens to day will not matter.

Unfortunately, I'm afraid not. Millions of people tuned in to a peaceful mass meditation state of mind may be able to make a difference though. The problem is organizing and co-ordinating it though.

Spread the word, build arguments against it, put them on the net. The truth always comes out, we have the technology to make it happen much faster now.

yeah discover a plentiful energy source and make it available to everyone. Don't listen to ppl who tell you you can't do it, and never stop until you reach that goal. I think energy is a big source of wars today. I'm not sure about what to do about the religious aspects of them though.... (religion bites)

Great question.
If enough people answer your question that they want to prevent war too, there is hope.
