My favorite book as a child was Winnie the Pooh. I guess I liked it for the characters in the book and it was a book that even an 8 year old would enjoy reading so really it was a children's book that covered a wide range of age groups from toddler up to 8 years of age. Also it was the first classic story that my Grade 3 teacher introduce to me in fact she use to read to us for 10 minutes each afternoon when I went to school.

A Fish Out of Water, by Dr. Seuss. It was a very funny and loving book about a boy and his pet fish whom he fed too much which made the fish grow up real big. He follows the fish on many adventures before he finds the man who sold it to him and made it small once again. The point of this story is that your imagination is the limit. A very good book for young, growing minds.

When I was very little I loved reading and re-reading all of the Dr. Seuss books. We owned them and I adored them. When I got to school age I was madly in love with any fairy tale re-do, particularly with beautiful artwork. My sisters had this record of The Brothers Grimm being read by some famous actor. I loved to sneak the record (that would be vinyl!) when my sisters weren't home. It came with a book and I would read along. When I was 8 and 9 years old I discovered some graphic novels of E.A. Poe's shorter pieces. My favorite of them was The Black Cat...no, wait, the Tell Tale Heart....no, wait....LOL Who can choose!
As to why....the Dr. Seuss were just plain fun to read and say aloud. The Grimm's Tales were like pre-Goosebumps and so creepy and wonderful. The Poe seems like a natural progression from the Grimm's. Any kind of ghost story or magic (and scary) story would grip me and keep me tight! Later I discovered Frankenstein, Dracula, and Rebecca and WOW did that open up the whole world of gothic horror!

I loved reading the Mary Poppins books and a series called Mrs. Piggle Wiggle. When it was time for me to read to my children, I used to read a wide variety of books but the favorites were The Lorax, Green Eggs and Ham, and Sneetches and other stories. You have to love Dr. Seuss!

In the 1950s I loved the Nancy Drew books because I liked imagining myself as a smart, successful detective like Nancy. I also loved the Walter Farley horse books because I could imagine myself on my horse (I didn't have a horse) galloping over the plains. Great sense of freedom.

I always loved the Little House books by Laura Ingalls Wilder. The whole series is just a wonderful story of the pioneer days. I still read them once a year.
And coming in second...Harriet the Spy by Louise Fitzhugh. It was just hysterical!
