The best routes to take are to research the process of starting a business as well as the industry you're interested in.

Research, research, research – this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can. Here are some book titles that are relevant:

You really need to talk to your lawyer, or get a lawyer to help you through this process. better to pay a little now than a lot later.
first step is to choose a name and search your state's corporation records to make sure the name is not already taken, and that it does not infringe on a similar name. then you reserve that name. then you file for the corporate charter (with articles of incorporation). then apply for a corporation taxpayer id from the feds.
get a lawyer.
