I gather your referring to, Marie Charlotte Ameldie Augusta Victoria Clementine Leopoldine of Belgium, later to become her imperial Majesty Empress Carlota, the wife of the very late somewhat it would appear, naive but well meaning, Emperor Maximilian of Mexico.
Emperor Maximilian, and two of his generals, were executed by a firing squad, even after dozens of rejected pleas from world famous writers, poets painters and dignitaries throughout the world asking his sentence be commuted.
A terrible thing under any circumstances, it left his wife, the daughter who's name you wanted, in Europe at the time of her husbands execution.
She had rushed to Europe in desperation, hoping to gain support for her husbands position in Mexico. She had even pled her cause to the Pope.
Having failed gaining support, in the hope, under the circumstances, of her husbands returning to Europe, Napolian lll, himself was urging Maximilian's abdoning Mexico.,
Down crest with failure she never returned to Mexico.
A year later,on June 19, 1867, in Mexico, Maximilian was executed.
Having lived a fortunate and privileged life of Royalty it would be a hard press to use the descriptive phase of her being "ill fortuned". Granted,..
It was said that on learning of her husbands demise she totally collapsed, possibly to the extent of insanity and lived the remainder of her life quietly, in seclusion.,
First living in Italy than returning to her native home of Belgium where she died at 87, January 1927.
That it?

Simple. Charlotte Amelie, spanish speaking people might recognize her as "Carlota Amalia".
She was Maximilian Habsburg's wife. They were offered the throne of Mexico by the mexican conservatives in 1864.
She went back to Europe in 1867, and Maximilian stayed back, he was eventually overthown, and executed by a firing squad, which is the painting you are referring to
