so many people think that NASA waste our tax dollars. Does anyone know what great inventions or things have been developed that make our lives easlier because of our Space Shuttle Program began.

My husband works for Space Command in the military. One thing is the GPS satellites. These satellites make our cell phones work, clocks and numerous other things work.

Space shuttle program is being use to construct a space station as observation post outside of earth to monitor the movement of NEO's (Near Earth Objects). There are predictions (not made public) by NASA scientist, that a giant asteriod of aound 30 kms wide and 65 kms long are circling the earth. It is still considered far from us, but due to its size and the pull of gravity from earth, there are great possibilites that a collission will occur in near future. Very few of us knew these things. The countries involved in this project headed by the USA are building some sort of a laser gun to intercept and destroy any NEO's that will enter our atmosphere and pose treat to mankind. Any particles of the NEO's which able to pass through these laser will be intercepted by precision guided patriot missiles stationed all over the world, especially in the USA. This project started during the term of President Ronald Reagan, and they called it "The Star Wars Project". I hope, these project will succeed. Lets hope and pray.

Speaking only in terms of MANNED SPACE EXPLORATION:

Can you name one? I would be interested in knowing, actually.

It's not space meals. I don't think I would want to eat that stuff.

What was developed in space and is now mass produced on Earth? Or what bi-product of space exploration resulted in a product on Earth? Maybe the H1,2,3. Those look sort of like the lunar rover. Maybe advanced missile systems for the military. No, that doesn't count. We need something that has made our lives EASIER on a daily basis. grrr. I honestly can't think of one. Can you add it into the details please?

I actually am all for space exploration. But I think if we committed less effort to manned exploration (which is expensive, to say the least) and more to taking care of Mother Earth...well, I would feel satisfied.

Do you think it is a good idea to colonize Mars? Blow up this planet so we have an excuse to do so?

EDIT:

GPS, yes, but we don't need people in space for that. Jobs? Are you kidding me? If we developed all sorts of industry for renewable energy sources, wouldn't all the high-tech people be able to find jobs still?

Honestly people...just because the jobs are there, doesn't mean they couldn't be somewhere else.

I just want to see Earth FIXED, before it is inhabitable for the masses.

NASA finds out information about the beggining of the universe everyday, but for truth, no they don't affect your daily life at all, thats because anything that can affect it, has already been discovered.

Its the next level of science, they main thing that hasn't been discovered. To not fund that, would be to put a stop to the human race's mental evolution and forever stay in this life that we are in now.

So what if it is a waste, it is so cool. NASA has done many great things. We went to the moon, we have probes going to mars, we are discovering new stars and planets all the time. Call me nerdy, but I think it is all very exciting. Plus how cool would it be if someday we did discover life on other planets. Even if it is just weird algae, I think it would be worth it.

I always am amazed that anyone thinks its a waste of tax money.
Where do people think the money goes?? Guess what - it goes to pay the salary of all the wokers - NASA, Lockheed, Ratheon, Boeing.... someone's dad or mom earns their paycheck. The money never gets thrown away. Money never really buys 'things' it buys people's time.

edit: It matters if you are one of the workers. I would rather pay someone to work than pay someone who doesn't, and our taxes do THAT too.

Other than national defense and education I cannot think of a better use of my tax dollars than space exploration.
