Start by downloading updates - Windows, Office, antivirus software, drivers, anything else that needs regular updates. You'll probably have to restart once or more as a result of installing updates.

Then do backups of essential documents and files - don't forget your postoffice file if you're using Microsoft Outlook or another email/contact program.

Then do a virus scan, spybot check (Spybot Search & Destroy is a great one), disk cleanup, and disk defragment in that order. If you have a newer, faster machine, you can do more than one of those at a time.

I do all those processes once a month. You may choose to do it more or less often depending on your computer usage or whether you are having problems.

Clean up your disk first and then defrag your hard drive. Doing it in the oppisite order would cause fragmentation again as you deleted files.

There are two things that happen when you defragment your computer's hard drive:

1. It take non-contiguous files and moves them so the blocks of data are contiguous. This means when reading a single file the hard drive head does not have to travel all over the platter to find the data.

2. It takes non-contigous space and moves it around to provide more contiguous space. Again, this prevents the hard drive head from moving around too much when looking for free blocks to save data.

If the head of your hard drive moves around too much when reading and writing this can cause your performance to slow down in terms of reads and write. The average user will probably never notice a difference, but if you do a lot of video or audio editing you might notice a difference after defragmenting your hard drive.

unquestionably, you will desire to do the disk cleanup first. Cleanup deletes all the unneeded archives left over out of your pc doing issues like installation utility, downloading archives, and basically traveling cyber web pages. Defrag. organizes all the archives on your problematicchronic so as that they may well be study greater on the instant, which reinforces velocity. you will desire to do disk cleanup first, so which you do away with the archives you do no longer decide on first and then set up each and every of those you do decide on. or you have basically prepared each and every thing and then taken out little chunks of that documents. Kinda like construction a wall with Legos and then taking some out at random spots. you will desire to run the two approximately as quickly as a month.

Delete cookies, history, temp internet files, run a virus scan, spyware scan, remove any unwanted programs and any other files that you don't want like saved emails etc. Then run disk cleanup, a registry cleaner, then defrag.

You should first clean up your hard disk before you defrag your hard drive, or it will ruin the point of defragmenting anyway
