I would rather be powerful and liked. I've noticed that people like celebrities and politicians get everything given to them for free. They're already rich, but they don't have to spend their own money on anything.
If you're powerful and feared, you always have to watch your back. Somebody always wants to take you down. Think about Castro or Saddam Hussein. Do you think they could ever eat a meal without wondering if they were about to get poisoned by an enemy or some backstabbing assistant?

I would rather be powerful and feared because no one wants to mess with someone they fear. But if you are too well-liked, someone always wants to bring you down. Plus, to get someone to fear you IS power. In fact, there's a Latin saying that goes: "Let them hate so long as they fear." That's a fascinating quote.

Powerful and FEARED, Being liked is good and all but if it comes to someone wanting to take over they will. Being liked you get stepped on. Feared gives a nice shaky respect and they would be too afraid to take over.

I think it is important to have a combination of both. In order to be a good leader, it is my opinion that you need to be liked by your people but still feared in a sense. Also, to your enemies, you need to hold a high sense of fear.
