Take him to dinner, to a ballgame, .... it really doesn't matter just spend time with him. Create a memory that the two of you will share for the rest of your lives. Make sure you take photos and record the day! Have a great time.

How much do you want to spend?
A set of mats for the car
An mp3 player (if he works out it may be useful)
A model airplane (for big kids)
A new set of speakers for the car stereo
A subscription to a paper/mag (some can be rather pricy)
A set of cufflinks (they're back in style)
A nice watch
A fishing rod
A gift certificate (for his accountant)
A nice massage pad for the chair
A golf club
Anything to do with his hobby
A couple hours of massage therapy
A software package
A radar detector
Not knowing anything about him, it's a bit hard to make suggestions..

Don't do the over the hill crap, he already know's he's old and i'm sure its a hard time to deal with, just get all his friends and family together and have a BBQ.
and have people talk aobut things that have happend in his life IE funny things he has done.

Get him two twenty year olds??... Hey, you gotta know the guy better than I do.. I think you have to shop this one - - go out and look around and something will catch your eye.. look for something he might like but would not buy for himself.. good luck!!

You can give him an autograffed picture of ME, the world's greatest, most talented, shmartest, sexyest, most perfect person! And for $500.00 i will come sing happy birthday to him. That would be the best thing anyboddy could get for their birthday sincs everyboddy loves, idolises and worships me!!!! (its not easy being perfect)

Get him something he would like if he has a hobby. Like if he goes fishing get him a new pole etc. If he is not married take for a night out on the town in Vegas.
