my hard drive took a crap and i was wondering if there is any way i could get it to boot from usb it is an ibm think pad 390e

Yes, it is possible if your BIOS supports it. When your computer boots up, go into your BIOS and see if there is an option for allowing a USB device to be bootable. If there isn't I would suggest a free download of Knoppix. This is an OS that can be put onto a CD and run from the CD ROM. This way you would have access to your files to back them up then reload your OS onto your hard drive.
Next time consider having a second hard drive installed and configure it as another partition just for your data files so you won't have to go through so much hassle getting your system restored if your HDD with the OS craps on you again.
