The rule of thumb is if the tampon hurts:
1. You are not inserting it correctly.
2. You may be sensitive/allergic to the material and cannot use them.
I think a lot of it is that you're stressing when inserting it, so naturally, the muscles down there are tight, and so inserting the tampon would make it hurt.
Best advice is to take a nice, deep breath, and inhale as you insert it. If you exhale, it makes the muscles "push" down there, so that can hurt as well.
It's all about finding a comfortable position to insert it, and then learning how to be comfortable when actually putting it in.
The best way for me when I was younger was to stand by my tub, and put one foot on the tub and one on the floor, like I'm stair stepping. Insertion was easier that way until I got used to it...now I can insert them when on the toilet.
Sorry this is so graphic, but I can feel your frustration.
Best of luck honey...message me if you need more help.

You need to relax. There are muscles at the opening of the vagina that constrict when you are nervous. Read the package insert and decide on the best position (sitting, squatting, laying down) for you. You can also use a lubricant like K-Y jelly to help ease them in until you get used to it. DO NOT USE VASELINE as it does not allow your vaginal area to breathe.
Pick a tampon absorbency that matches your flow. Tampax makes junior, slender regular, regular and super. Start with the lowest absorbency and wear a panty shield for back up. Wash your hands before and after inserting a tampon.
Change every 4 to 6 hours.
You'll get the hang of this in no time. In case you are wondering, tampon it will not affect your virginity. The hymen in most girls is broken long before you ever start a period due to the active lifestyle of most girls.
Congratulations on this stage in your development as a woman.

Hey,
Pads are my method to stay sanitary during that time of the month. You need to use something that's comfortable for you. Don't just use it cause you think you have to. Plus, if you're having a problem, your parent is the one person in this world who would search the earth end to end to find a solution. Dads may not totally understand, but they care and will do all that's in their powr to help you. I'd confide in my parent first, before asking strangers. But it still took alot of courage to ask your question.
God Bless
