I've played for years (20+) , did the club / bar thing , some shows , recording , etc. blah blah, so i've been taking time off to regroup my thoughts (a lot of time off!) and not even touching any of my axes. I want to clear old habits and music thats been in my head for years , and start over again in a new direction. Anyone else doing this?

I quit playing when I got married and had kids. I didn't have time.
In your case you should keep those fingers moving.
Take a new direction. Experiment with different genres in your listening and playing.
In jazz check out Django Reinhart, Wes Montgomery, Larry Carlton, Al Dimeola, etc
In country check out Chet Atkins & Albert Lee. Also bluegrass.
In blues check out Mike Bloomfield, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Albert King, Jimmy Johnson, T Bone Walker, early Allman bros, etc
In rock check out Eddie Van Halen, Jimi Hendrix, ZZ Top, Pink Floyd, etc.

I was taking a break but that was because it was summer vacation and I am a music major at a local college. so I play alot during the school year but if you feel a block try listening to new types of music it helps me want to play again aswell as a new instrument like piano or bass it will help keep the finger nimble and let you see music from a different point of view. Just never give up

The longest i can do that is a week. If you're bored with guitar but still want to play music you could try to learn a new instrument, this can inspire your guitar playing too when you get back to it
