Honestly, I am not the same as I was last year. I am more aware than ever about the divides of class and race, not just marginally aware, but I am deeply aware now. I know New Orleans will never be the same again. How I felt when the Hurricane hit versus now is somewhat the same only now I am more political and more aware of things that go on in our world. It has not gone into the back of my mind like other disasters have. I remember those disasters, but they go into the back of my mind. This disaster has stayed in my memory and even though it is not on the news as much as it was last year, the images of the destruction are still ivisble. I know that if I were to go to Louisiana now, the reminents of the destruction are still there. The disaster brought on political storms as well as other problems. it is the political storms and the images of people suffering that I will remember. The fact that I have relatives who lived in Louisiana at the time makes the disaster very close to my heart. They are okay now, but I know that many residents from in and around the New Orlanes area will never forget. many will never return to New Orleans because for some there is nothing to return to.

I went to New Orleans East about two months ago. (That's what they call one section of their city.) It's looks like it was hit by bulldozers and tanks. Businesses are not all reopening. I couldn't find any fast food available anywhere. No Burger King, no McDonald's, no Wendy's, none of that. The roofs are still torn off a large percentage of the structures. There were still water-logged abandoned cars scattered around. Life has not returned to that section of the town and I imagine it's the same in other parts.

I feel like the people there have been treated like third-world citizens and I don't think anything that is done in the future will change my feelings on this. What has happened has happened nothing will change that and frankly, it is an atrocity.

as a louisiana citizen i feel ashamed that this state didn't help there own more than they did. I think the state government did a horrible job first of all by not fixing the levee system before the storm and then by letting so many ppl suffer i know a lot of ppl say they should have evacuated there were a lot of sick and poor ppl who didn't have the funds to evacuate or the ability. and now they are slowly rebuilding but whats to say another won't hit and the levee's are still not going to hold its a shame and i am ashamed of the louisiana government and the us government we have billions to spend on a war and millions to send to ppl overseas during there times of need what about those in need in our own country

I am living at the Armed Forces Retirement Home, Washington, D.C.

We have 262 people here that were in the Armed Forces Retirement Home, Gulfport, Mississippi. We probably will not be able to return or go there for the next 3 years. During the mean time we have had 50 people die. That means we may have another 100 to 150 people die before they can go back home.

I will not leave it up to you as to filling in the blanks as to what I am thinking.

Honestly, I thought that they should all move here to Houston. But now, I'm seeing how it is affecting people in need from Houston and I feel bad for them. Why didn't Louisiana help their own?
