When fraternities and sororities were first formed, they often chose as their "letters" the first letters of a motto in Greek that they believed represented their values or goals. Sometimes these mottos are secret, sometimes they are not.

For example, one non-secret motto is the motto of ΘΧ (Theta Chi) is ΘHPÓΠOΣA XEÍP (Theroposa Cheir), which means "Helping Hand" in Greek.

I *think* they're Greek. I know, biblically, that Alpha = first and Omega = last...but I'm not honestly sure.

I wish I could help you more, but maybe google "sorority name meanings" and see what comes up.
