Go to your local library or look at your library's homepage and see if they have downloadable E-books or downloadable audiobooks

Of course there are, and quite a few of them! First of all, there is the Gutenberg project, where you may find what interests you, and, beside that (I mentioned it because is one of the first on the net), you can visit the page of the annual fair of ebooks here:
http://worldebookfair.com/Collections.htm and for sure you will find something that interests you.

Sign up at Baen's Books and move to the Bar where you can check out several different options, one of which is free ebooks.
