I think you're talking about the video for Metallica's "One" it came out in the late 80's. The song "One" is from the album And Justice For All."

Well I don't know what the video was, but the figure sounds like it is the main character of the anti-war book 'Johnny Got His Gun', where a world war 1 soldier that had suffered terrible wounds woke up in a hospital in France. He had no arms or legs, or face, which means he had no eyes, mouth, or nose. The only sense he had left was feeling. He was shut off from the world. In part 1, called 'the world of the dead', he lived in his memories that depressed him, because they were full of regret. This ended with him discovering he could communicate with his nurses by hitting his head against his pillow, using morse code to communicate. Part 2 is called 'the world of the living', where he interacts with the world around him, and learns to judge days passing. It procedes with him receiving medals, he figures, from military officers. He becomes disgusted with them, war in general, and how soldiers are used as fodder in the games of the powerful. I had to read this for english 201 in college. I won't forget the surreality, darkness and abject piteous of the short novel.

Uh, forgive my digression from the question. Maybe it will give you some hints.
