Don't tell the truth to your clients.

If you're in something where the customer has a fairly wide choice of alternative products (eg, selling cars), try to find out what the customer needs and wants, before directing them to a specific product.

Try to let your own personality show too. It's usually pretty easy to pick up on someone putting on a shallow persona, and will make you seem dishonest.
Being yourself makes you seem much more trust-worthy.

Know your product, know your target market, and honestly match the two. Word of mouth is the best form of advertising so treat everyone as though you were treating family and your name will get around. If you don't your name will get around but in a bad way. Sales has a bad reputation (snake oil, used car salesman, etc.) but it's the primary distribution channel for customers whether it's phone sales, retail sales, business to business sales, consumer sales, etc. Read motivational books but Zig Ziglar, Tom Hopkins and others. Believe in your product but mainly believe in yourself.

Watch other salespeople who are getting results. But, don't try to copy any one approach. Be yourself. The best way to improve is to analyze a sales pitch that you've blown. If you don't make mistakes, you're not making enough calls.
Vertical selling is effective. Find out who makes the real decisions and try to get to them. Don't step on too many toes getting to them though. Good hunting

Sell people what they want at the best price.

Always be honest.

You'll come out ahead in the long run vs. someone who uses dishonest tactics.

Find ways to make the product appeal to a person's most common needs. If they ask you to find a specific product, don't stop until you find it!
