They are watching you and seeing how your arms move and your lips move, etc. They don't know how to do anything and when you show them, they will also want to learn to do the same. Of course, they can't do all the things you do, so they learn a bit at a time. Ever realize how children copy everything adults do? Well, its the same when they're young, just when they're infants, they can't do as much.

They say the best time for an infant to learn is when they are not moving their limbs but rather they are looking at you intently. Not saying that they don't learn any other time but that is when they pick up the most.

Everything's new to a baby, so everything is learning. Just don't send your baby in front of the tv, Baby Einstein or not. It's more beneficial for your child to watch you unload the dishwasher or watch the cat sleep than to sit in front of the idiot box.

Each game teaches them a skill you take for granted. Like peak-a-boo teaches them object permanency (knowing that things are still there even though you can't see them). Patty cake helps build muscle and motor skills, something babies are always increasing.

infants/babies/toddlers are all sponges....they soak up everything they see and hear. most of the time, it's just building their brain and helping them be able to learn things easier in the future. but what's really cool is when the start immitating you, i'd say that's the proof. ~~~

Babies are learning every single minute that they are awake. They are watching and listening and taking everything in.

They smile... I'll never forget the 1st time I connected w/my oldest... I had laid her on my lap and was lifting her up by her arms toward my face... The 1st time, she seemed rather perplexed... The 2nd time, she smiled... I did, too...!
