AVG free is a great antivirus. It is made by grissoft. You can type it in on the search bar and find it easily. It is easy to update the virus database on the application as well. I think it's the best and use it in addition to the one I pay for and it catches things the one I pay for doesn't!

The most reliable is Avast Home edition v4.7. It's free and computer experts use it. When you download and run ask it to scan on reboot. This will clean up everything suspicious, virus, worms Trojan and adware.
Get CCleaner for free also to keep your machine clean and lastly download SpyBot to protect against Adware. All Free and excellent. Defragment your computer weekly. A clean and well maintained machine runs faster and more efficiently

You can also download AVG here:

it's not the best but it's better than nothing.
If you get DSL or boardband, your ISP may include a free program. Comcast offers free McAfee AV and Firewall.

Avast! Antivirus is the best antivirus program, and it's free! (http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html). You'll have to register for the program, but it's worth it.
