My husband is a cabinetmaker--he uses 3/4" for rails and stiles and 5/8" for the panel if it's raised panel, if it's a flat panel, he uses 1/4" MDF because the slot is sloppy if you use 1/4" veneer core in the panel...if you intend to make your desk out of MDF you can use self tapping screws but with solid wood you just can't get away with not predrilling your holes...it's hard to help when I don't know exactly what your trying to build...He uses 1 1/4" screws when he screws a piece of plywood perpendicular to another...

Well first I don't like how the character's refer to their boss as "master" it seems much too Lord of the Rings to me. I liked how Aniela at first seemed very bossy, in control and confident; but suddenly you turned her into a sucker and wimp when face to face with her boss. What I'm saying is I like how your characters started out, with Aniela being the bossy tough girl and Demetris being the clumsy wimpy guy, but near the end it seemed to get messy and all over the place, you should keep your characters simple and likable, and make up your mind with when it comes to developing their personalities; failure to do so would give your character's multiple personalities. Now I understand you want the boss to be very intimidating and demanding, but I think Anielas character should stand up to him a little, and not sink herself into the chair nervously like Demetris would, the introduction to Aniela made me think of her as a tough controlling woman which I prefer, it gives your characters more of a variety. Now I can't tell you much more because I don't know your plot nor your theme, I see quite a few grammar and spelling errors but other than that it appears to have a lot of potential and I hope that you pursue it.

I recently built one out of MDF and laminated the veneer on it it was a little more work than maybe using real hardwood but very cheap and looks good plus the mdf is really easy to work and shape. I just saw a desk at the furniture store and tried to copy the design as best I could.

as far as tips,
use 5/4 deck boards
try not having any joints in the middle of the deck
use 2 inch or better deck screws and stay away for the sides and ends at least one inch bury the screw heads
for as your frame work 2 ft or less on center 16" is idea
4x4's as corner post and short posts inbetween ,
keep it level and oh , when you do the hand rails sit in a chair and get your height if you go 36 high you will be looking at the rails for ever

You obviously have no woodworking skills. So do yourself a favor. Buy a 24" x 80" flush door preferably prefinished and lay it across two 30" high file cabinets (two drawer type) one on one end one on the other.
Or go pay a visit to IKEA. It'll cost less.
