In the four years have you tried to make contact with your neighbors, or have they tried to make contact with you? If not, they probably are not interested in socializing with neighbors. It seems that most people today have a full agenda and don't have time. Just try to be a good neighbor in every other way and look for friendships elsewhere.

Yeah, I've lived in my house for seventeen years, and I still don't know my neighbors. Just an occasional hi and a smile. I really want to get to know them, but it's a bit too late for that. Plus, I'm shy.

First of all which country do you live in? because this is a common thing, but depends on the country in which you live. It does not happen in the so-called third World countries, but very common in the so-called western countries. I wonder if these pepole have taken their time to look around.

Is it not selfishness?

Somewhat. I know my neighbors, but I couldn't even tell you their names. But we exchange hellos and chat every now and then. But it sounds like you don't even do that. If you really meant you don't know them AT ALL, I'd say a little uncommon.

i wish i could say the same. Do you have kids? that's usually how you get to know your neighbors because the kids will become friends with their kids.

As long as we don't bother each other, I could care less about my neighbors, if I don't know them.
